Campy’s New Friend

Look who’s made friends with Campy—it’s mmmmm, the hungry little monster designed by Joan De Lurio!

campy_giolou

I have a feeling that mmmmm is only interested in getting to know Campy for one purpose.

You can get the pattern for Campy and the Mallows FREE with any purchase at the Mochimochi Shop through this Friday, August 14th. And buy the pattern for mmmmm at Joan’s Ravelry shop.

Thank you for the test, Joan!

July 09 Movies

When I wasn’t knitting tiny things in July, I watched a few movies. Here are the movies that I saw and what I thought of them.

In the theater

The Hangover

I had heard from a trusted source (who will go unnamed) that this was a funny movie. Eh, it started out pretty funny, then it got progressively less so. Also, the plot didn’t really work for me, even as a silly comedy plot. I give it a C+. (The plus is for Ed Helms. I met him once!)

In the Loop

A funny and very smart political satire, with not one lagging moment. The best movie I’ve seen in a theater in a really long time. John overheard a woman saying that she “didn’t laugh once” as we were exiting the theater, which was almost as funny as the movie. I suppose she didn’t like the bad language.

Humpday

I kind of liked this small movie. The acting was done in a natural style and the whole thing was very sensitive. There was one scene that employed horrible tinkly indie music, but since it was just one scene, I could forgive it for that.

Lolita

Everybody seems to know about Stanley Kubric’s Lolita, but no one seems to have actually seen it, as far as I can tell. So I decided to see it, and I liked it. By far my favorite thing about it was Peter Sellers as Quilty (Humbert Humbert’s rival). He is so great! The girl who played Lolita, Sue Lyon, was also very good. Unfortunately she doesn’t appear to have had much of a successful acting career after this.

On TV

You’ve Got Mail

I can explain this one. See, John and I have been watching the reruns of Frasier on Lifetime lately, and because they come on several times a day, our DVR is often set to that channel already when I turn the TV on. So when I feel like watching television at other times and there’s nothing on but a Meg Ryan movie WITH commercials that I can fast forward through… so it just happened.

I totally have memories of my own AOL days, so that aspect of the movie (and the way that the Internet spurs some heated debate in some scenes) is sort of interesting. The rest? Not so much, and really dated, and so what if I teared up a little at the end.

Look Cats!

Hey look we have cats!

tuckerzissou

Their names are Tucker and Zissou, and they’re brothers who are almost identical. They are John’s brother’s cats, and they’re staying with us for a couple of months while he relocates.

They are so cute and fun! Zissou loves playing with twist ties (specifically the big kind that hold together electronics cables), sitting in laps, and sleeping on plastic bags. Tucker loves playing with rubber bands (specifically cloth-covered hair bands), getting brushed, and sleeping in piles of socks.

I wish we could keep them forever! But they are also great trial kitties, and they’ve been so much fun that now we are sure that we want to get cats of our own sometime very soon.

Tiny Things Wrap-up

If you missed it, I just spent the month of July knitting tiny things—one for every weekday, for 23 tiny things in total!

tinys

I spent a lot of time on these, but it was so satisfying to have a big collection of them in the end. Some were easier than others—I remember whipping up the Tiny Ice Cream in very little time, while the Tiny Vacuum Cleaner was one of the hardest for me to design. I had fun with them all, but some of my personal favorites are the Tiny Forest, Tiny Lion, Tiny Cheeseburger, and Tiny Computer. What are your favorites?

As I think I’ve mentioned in the comments, I would like to make some of these available as patterns, but I haven’t yet decided in what form to publish them. (And I have a ton of other projects going on that I need to finish up first!) I’m really happy to see the great response these guys have gotten and it’s wonderful to know that there is interest in patterns.

I’m going to try to keep up the series with one new tiny thing each week. In the meantime, I’m adding a new (non-tiny) summertime pattern to the Mochimochi Shop later this week. More to come on that soon!

Update: Thank you to Super Cute Kawaii for posting about the tinys!

Tiny Garden Gnome

Update: You can find the Tiny Gnome pattern in this PDF download and in my book Teeny-Tiny Mochimochi!

The twenty-third tiny thing is a Tiny Garden Gnome.

tinygardengnome

He recently went to Nome, Alaska, where he was very disappointed not to find a “G.” (Thanks, John!)

It looks like Shannon was the first commenter to suggest a gnome, so she gets a free pattern. Thanks Shannon!

So the month of Tiny Things has come to an end, but I’ve had so much fun with it that I’m thinking I’ll turn it into a weekly feature on the blog. Sound good?
