I noticed this ad for Fuse (a music-oriented cable channel I’ve never seen) on a big screen when I was walking by Times Square the other night. There aren’t too many ads that feature little crocheted toys and Old 97’s songs, so I thought it was worth sharing. Anyone know who made the toys?

My second attempt at amigurumi resulted in an almost convincing toy!

This is Frankie the Silent Film Star. You might remember him from such slapstick classics as Crackerjack Capers and Gold Diggers of Aught Six. Unfortunately the talented tap-dancing Frankie was phased out of Hollywood once the talkies took over—there were only so many situations writers could come up with to explain away his lack of a mouth.
I guess Frankie doesn’t look drastically different from my pathetic Little Give Up of last fall, but armed with acrylic yarn and a metal crochet hook (thanks, Rebecca!), it wasn’t half the struggle this time. I primarily used this kind of blurry YouTube video to refresh my technique and then experimented with simple increases and decreases. And a star was born!
I’m really impressed by people who can convert knitting patterns into crochet. Here is the tiniest one I’ve seen so far!

An itty-bitty crocheted Ninjabun, made by Megumi in Japan. Don’t you love him in his little scarf!
Finally, something for all you crocheters!
Jennifer at Kounting Sheep has just converted my pattern for Grass into crochet!! Her version is called Winter Grass, and the whole pattern is up on her blog for everyone to try.
As you can see, Jennifer’s Winter Grass closely resembles the original, except in crochet. As a real beginner in crochet, I have yet to try out Jennifer’s pattern myself, but it’s at the top of my list.
As far as I know, this is the first time that a Mochimochi Land pattern has been converted into crochet. How exciting! Seeing that it can be done has me looking forward to future crochet possibilities (that is, once I master the techniques myself…)
Thank you so much, Jennifer, for sharing your talent!
This is my first amigurumi ever:

I call him Little Give Up.
He was originally supposed to be an owl from this book,
… but we never made it that far together. I think I’m having issues with my crochet hook and/or yarn choice—I’m using wool yarn that’s a bit grabby, and I kept switching to smaller and smaller hooks just so that I could fit the silly plastic things through the yarn, and now the whole thing is so tight that it was a struggle just to squeeze the plastic eyes in.
So, I’m ready for any advice any of you amigurumi pros might have. My specific questions might be:
1. Is it generally easier to work with a metal hook, as opposed to the plastic ones? (Any particular recommendations?)
2. Is it generally easier to work with an acrylic yarn, instead of wool?
And, even more generally,
3. What do you like about amigurumi, as opposed to knitted toys? (I promise you won’t hurt my knitterly-feelings!)
Thank you in advance for your help!
Update 10/7/07: I just received the lovliest kit of metal crochet needles from Rebecca, so I am now armed and dangerous! Thank you Rebecca!!!
