Teeny-Tiny Diorama

A couple months ago I made a diorama as a little visual promo for Teeny-Tiny Mochimochi—I’ll mostly be using it for in-person events, so I thought I’d share some pics here for people who won’t be able to see it in person.

A diorama! The last time I made one of those, I think I was still in elementary school. I had a blast coming up with the scene that the Tinys from the book would inhabit. I determined early on that I needed a Tiny Chicken crossing the road, and her motivation turned out to be a pair of Tiny Fried Eggs.

(The Tiny Armadillo to the right is playing the role of roadkill.)

Tiny Bride and Tiny Groom are perpetually tying the knot, with Tiny Xs and Os serving as their wedding party.

And somehow a Tiny Caveman beating a Tiny Computer with his club seemed appropriate.

To make the diorama, I used many of my samples that I already had on hand from taking the photos that appear in the book, so the only things I had to make new were the scenery and the letters. But those letters were a ton of work! I timed it, and it took me exactly 30 minutes to make one of the inch-tall Es in “Teeny-Tiny.” I love how they came out though.

Soupy, of course, says he could have done way better. And gimme that Tiny Chicken.

If you live in NYC, you’ll be able to see this in person and get a signed copy of the book on September 8th at the Lion Brand Yarn Studio! (Check their website closer to the date for the details.)

Coming Soon: Flushie the Toilet

Look who’s going to make a splash soon in Mochimochi Land!

flushie_announce

I’m kind of ridiculously excited about this design—as fellow toy designer Katie Boyette must know, it feels like a real accomplishment to figure out how to knit a toilet. The pattern for Flushie the Toilet and his sidekick Professor Plunger will be in the Mochimochi Shop any day now.

Flushie seemed somehow appropriate for today because it’s my birthday, and I’m turning 30! I am not ashamed to be a real grownup age and knitting toilets for a living.

Tiny Pineapple Has Many Talents

Tiny Pineapple may neither be a pine nor an apple, but that doesn’t mean he can’t do a whole lot!

Grilled, mashed, baked, conserved,
Dried, fried, sliced or preserved,
Tiny Piney can do them all,
Even though he’s oh-so small!

That clever poem is courtesy of Gulnoza, our caption contest winner! That means she wins a free PDF pattern for Uh-Ohs. Nice job!

Thank you to everyone who submitted a caption—there were many really cute ones! (And now I get to go eat that pineapple.)

The Tale of Tiny Viking

With your help, today we present the epic tale of Tiny Viking, who braved the wooly wilds on the vast outskirts of Mochimochi Land.

According to Shama D, first our Tiny Viking decided that she would conquer the dreaded fiber-breathing dragon!!!

(The part of the dragon is played by Tiny Dino, who will appear in Teeny-Tiny Mochimochi!)

His breath made this conquest so not worth it, though, so she moved on.

Next, Erin Berry tells of her quest to conquer “the ring.” But alas, that’s just a stitch marker…sigh.

And finally, Mandy recounts the day that Tiny Viking set out to conquer the Isle of Fair with needles in hand. But no matter how many times she tried, she ended up with tangled yarn.

And that was the end of Tiny Viking. Just kidding—I hear she took up crochet and is now spending her days happily making granny-square sails for her ship.

Thank you to everyone who participated in the caption contest! (There were many other cute and hilarious captions!) And for Shama D, Erin Berry, and Mandy, I have three Potter Craft totes to send you. Congrats!

Hey That’s MY Book!

Look what came the other day!

ttmm_gnome1

Finally, my own copy of Teeny-Tiny Mochimochi! But as you can see, it was quickly claimed by a Tiny Gnome.

First he found the Tiny Hot Dog, and immediately demanded that I make him one. (I told him to finish looking at the book first.)

ttmm_gnome2

Next he checked out the who’s-who of knitted folks like him. Tiny Mermaid seemed to catch his eye…

ttmm_gnome3

Then he found his favorite page!

ttmm_gnome4

Tiny Gnome decided he had seen all the highlights worth seeing. Now where is that Tiny Hot Dog I promised?

Teeny-Tiny Mochimochi is coming out August 16th! You can pre-order it on Amazon and the Barnes & Noble website. In August, you’ll be able to find it in many local yarn stores, and signed copies will be available in the Mochimochi Shop!
