Hare-stories

If you’ve been following this blog for a while, you’ll remember that we held a Tiny Bunny Photo Contest last year and got tons of creative entries. Our first-ever springtime photo contest was such a hit that we’re doing it again! It won’t be bunnies this time, but check back on Monday for the big announcement.

Because this is Easter weekend and we have tons of fabulous photos of tiny bunnies, I’m posting a few bun-tastic favorites from last year. I hope it gets everyone inspired for the new contest, too!

Who knew bunnies could be construction workers and crime scene detectives? I can’t wait to see what happens in our next photo contest! By the way, the Tiny Baby Bunnies is a free pattern, if you need a last-minute Easter knit!

Have a happy Easter and Passover, everyone!

Winter Fun with Tiny Gnomes

I’m not sorry to see winter go this year (especially since it’s taking its time here in NYC), but there will always be special things about the season that make it a little bit worth the darkness and cold, as I am reminded by this delightful series of photos that Alaskan Knitter took of her small army of tiny (and not-so-tiny) gnomes.

Teeny gnomes engage giant gnomes in a snowball fight…

But they’d better not get too cocky…

A quick but fun escape!

Here’s a peek behind the scenes.

I love it when someone makes an epic mochi story with a series of photos.

Speaking of which, I’m about to announce this year’s springtime photo contest! As you might remember from last year’s Tiny Bunny Contest, for the spring photo contest we like to have a more narrow focus of characters, and we encourage storytelling and sequential photos. And we have a great new sponsor this year that I can’t wait to announce. Check back for all the details the first week of April!

Tiny Butterfly Poetry Extravaganza

I’m feeling almost not worthy of the beautiful poems you wrote about the humble butterfly I posted on Friday! Here’s a sneak preview of the reason I designed a butterfly in the first place.

tinybutterfly_piece

This is a detail of a piece that will be in my upcoming show in Berlin, which I’ve been working on nonstop for the past several weeks. (More on that soon!)

Moving on: there were so many fantastic poems that I can’t pick a single favorite. I have FOUR favorites, and it was difficult to even narrow it down to that. I’m going to order them here from silliest to most serious.

From Stephanie:

This right here is Tiny Butterfly
She’ll eat any kind of food that comes by!
Whether it’s a slice of rhubarb pie
or a bowl of noodles from Shanghai
even soup which was really fluorescent pink dye!
Hmmmm… that’s probably most likely why…
She has such bright pink wings to fly!

From Sophia:

There once was a little pink butterfly,
Who liked making scrapbooks on Shutterfly.
But one day she tripped…
All her captions were flipped!
That poor little pink “flutterby”.

From Zoe Lowinfell Cauvel :

Petite Lepidoptera, Butterfly.
Fluttering ‘round in my mind’s eye.
More magical than the fourth of July.
Diaphanous wings leave me tongue-tied.
Upon warm breezes glistered wings glide,
and awaken memories of summer time.

From MaryKate:

Migration
The wings of these, the butterflies,
wink their scarlet mist and I utter sighs.
Wisps of membrane, each fold
a fan, somehow hold
the fat forms in air.
I see them there
bobbing along flower
to flower, passing each hour
as though they could live beyond life. Pine
for what they cannot have: the distant buds, time.
Each petal falls and then, they swift of wing do fly
over far-off hills to birth their babes, to die.

I am so eager for spring right now! Because I can’t make myself choose a favorite, all four of these poets will get a set of tiny mochi pins!

(Winners, I’ll email you soon for your addresses.)

Thank you to everyone who contributed a poem!

Gillian’s Tiny Javert

I haven’t seen the new Les Misérables movie, but I’m nevertheless in love with this tiny Javert knitted by Gillian!

tinypirate_goblinqueen

According to her description, Gillian (goblinqueen10 on Flickr) used the Tiny Pirate pattern as a base for creating her little uniformed Frenchman. It reminds me of Zephrbabe’s Tiny Napoleon, except taller and with a little more glitz!

If you’ve made a fun mod on a Mochimochi pattern, be sure to add your photos to our Flickr group! They’ll appear on our gallery page, and they’ll be automatically entered in our next big photo contest.

By the way, I’ve been thinking about holding another springtime-themed mini photo contest. Hopefully I’ll get that together soon and announce it in March!

Tiny Squirrel Goes Nuts

Thank you for all the tiny squirrel captions over the weekend! It was too hard to pick a favorite, so the best we could do was narrow it down to three cute ones…

tinysquirrel_bean

From Lydia:

There once was a squirrel who was keen
On tasting a raw coffee bean.
But it was caffeinated,
Thus he was stimulated
And since then he’s never been seen!

From Starparty2000:

Tiny Squirrel is very sorry he bit the Tiny Snowman, from behind he thought it was a white peanut…

And lastly, from Johnna:

Tiny Squirrel is the one who hoards all those stitch markers and tapestry needles that you thought were lost!

Congrats to these clever caption writers, each of whom will get the upcoming Tiny Fall pattern collection for free! It’s coming to the Mochimochi Shop soon, so please stay tuned for Tiny Squirrel, Tiny Bat, and more!

Love Your Boo

It’s late September, the weather is becoming crisp, the light’s getting softer… it’s getting to be prime Boo knitting season! Really, Boo is a project that’s good for any weather, but his favorite time of the year is definitely fall, as shown by Amanda (who won our annual photo contest with this image a few years back)…

pc09_sf10

There are now more than 800 Boos on Ravelry—wow! Here’s a small sample of just how diverse this mochimochi species is…

boo2012

Left to right, top to bottom: Boos by aranyita, PurpleIrisCrafts, CrochetAmy, iamkashi, Fios, kendraja, MissSophie, minkey, sleeplessnscandia, RueDeekins, okate, ImpEmberStar

I love how dramatically different everyone’s Boos are—just by choosing a fun texture or color combination of yarn, your Boo will look like no one else’s!

And of course some knitters have come up with more elaborate pattern modifications, of which my favorite is this beautiful wing designed by Carissa Browning (aka nosmallfeet on Ravelry).

boo_nosmallfeet

Carissa was awesome enough to share her wing mod on her Ravelry project page, but I liked it so much that I asked her permission to include it in the official Boo pattern—and she said yes! I’m excited to be able to share her mod with even more people this way (with full credit going to Carissa, of course).

Have you knitted a Boo of your own lately? Please share your Boo on Ravelry and in our Mochimochi Flickr group!
