Ossu! Robot Dogs

Check out this video of awesome hand-sewn robot dogs! They were made by Ossu! Shugeibu, the “guerrilla” crafting club from Japan.

Ossu! Shugeibu is coming to gallery hanahou next month, where they will have a show and host a workshop on October 17th in which you can make your own robot dog! Email info@galleryhanahou.com for more info and to sign up.

My Sister’s Invites

I recently had the honor of designing my sister’s invitations for her upcoming wedding, and I just saw the results in print for the first time!

We had them printed by Pinball, an excellent company whom I’d previously seen do a beautiful printing job on projects for CWC-i. The envelopes are from Jam Paper and are made of recycled Kraft paper.

It’s so exciting to see my design printed so nicely! It’s also exciting that my sister is getting married.

Daniel Johnston Embroidery from Sublime Stitching

Jenny Hart recently unveiled new embroidery patterns over at Sublime Stitching, including a great collection of designs by artist/musician Daniel Johnston!

I’ve been a Daniel Johnston fan for a while now, but I’ve especially had him on my mind recently because I finally saw the documentary The Devil and Daniel Johnston a month or so ago. It was sad, but neat to see different aspects of his genius in footage from his earlier years.

I’m also a big fan of Jenny Hart, of course—I took an embroidery workshop with her a couple of years ago, and she was a great teacher and a huge inspiration to me when I was first thinking about publishing patterns. I love that she does so much collaboration with interesting artists and musicians.

Fun with Illustrator

I started taking a class in Illustrator a few weeks back, just because it was something I had wanted to learn for a while, especially after getting to know designers and professional illustrators who use it all the time.

I’m slowly grasping how it works and how to use some of the tools, and for practice the other night, I made these Boos!

The wings maybe could use a little work, but I’m happy with it as a beginner’s Illustrator illustration.

I don’t know if I would want to use Illustrator as a way to sketch out ideas from scratch, but it’s certainly a lot of fun to play around with manipulating basic shapes.
