Photo Contest Inspiration: 2012 Winners

Happy Friday! You know what a great activity for this weekend would be? Knitting up some mochis for your entry in our just-announced 2013 photo contest!

To get you inspired, here’s a look back at the winners from last year’s contest.

Joan gave us chills with her terrific Thriller scene! She won our Judges’ Choice award.

Our top three winners (who scored gift certificates, books, and a bunch of cute and crafty goodies) were chosen by all of you who voted!

In third place was the delightfully creepy Knitted Sofa by Jill Watt!

It was a really tight race between first and second place. In the end second place went to the incredible Knitman’s Sampler by Kimberly Schaeffer!

And finally, our first-place winner was the oh-so-cute Teamwork by Amy Hicks!

As you’ve likely seen, Amy’s winning photo is now representing this year’s contest in our announcement images.

These are some big shoes to fill, but I’m sure you are all up for the challenge! See this year’s full contest details, and let’s get started!

Clarinetgirl’s Tera Jocularis

Today’s mixed-up monster is another charmingly rotund beastie!

mixnmatch_cheryl

This colorful character is neither animal nor vegetable. Let’s let his creator, Clarinetgirl, explain:

Terra Jocularis – a small planet from the Large Magellenic Cloud – wanted to be a master of disguise. Unfortunately, he couldn’t keep his costumes straight and got his pumpkin vines mixed in with his cat ears. He has come to Earth to try his hand at comedy.

I think he’s off to a good start with that mustache! Clarinetgirl gets the pattern for Gobbledyghost for sharing her Mix-n-Match monster with us.

Thank you to everyone who’s shared their Super-Scary monsters in our Flickr Group this month! Stay tuned for our big photo contest, to be officially announced soon.

Katrosie’s Franken-Hexapus

It’s time for another cool mix-n-match ghoul from our Flickr group!

mixnmatch_katrosie

This is Franken-Hexapus, made by Katrosie71. Like many mixed up monsters, his name is weird and perfect!

While we’re on the subject of mixing, I thought I’d mix it up and send the Tiny Fall pattern collection to this mad knitter!

mixnmatch_tinyfall

What combination of body parts will we see next? There’s still time to make your own mix-n-match monster from the menu in Super-Scary Mochimochi. Share a photo in our Flickr group by the end of the month, and you may win a free pattern!

Ilana’s Cubed Rubik

Rubik the colorful cube monster made by Ilana might have the best monster name yet!

mixnmatch_ilana

He’s clearly a puzzle master who would dominate any game night. But losers couldn’t resent that cute face!

Another free Gobbledyghost pattern goes to Ilana because I featured her monster. Don’t forget to share your own Mix n Match concoctions in our Flickr group this month—I hope to feature lots more!

Joan’s Mix n Match Marx

Today’s featured Mix n Match monster is a mysterious weirdo.

mixnmatch_knitjvf

But according to his maker, Joan, this mustachioed monster isn’t trying to look like Groucho Marx.—He thinks he’s being Karl Marx!

I’m giving away the Gobbledyghost pattern to everyone whose Mix n Match monster I feature this month, so Joan’s Marxist monster can make a fellow dress-up friend.

gobbledyghost_mixnmatch

Have you made a Mix n Match monster from Super-Scary Mochimochi? Share your photo in our Flickr group, and you too could get a Gobbledyghost pattern if I feature it here!

Smonkey’s Stripe-tastic Two-Headed Beastie

I seem to have monsters on my mind this week, because this fantastic two-headed creature suddenly caught my attention, even though it’s been lurking in our Flickr group for a while.

mixnmatch_smonkey

He (they?) was made by Señora Monkeybutt (one of the better web handles I’ve seen!), and I’m glad I followed this photo to Ms. Monkeybutt’s photo stream, which is full of delightful stuff.

You too can knit a two-headed monster with endless variations with the “Mix n Match” menu of body parts in Super-Scary Mochimochi. I’d love to see more crazy Mix n Match variations pop up in our Mochimochi Friends Flickr group this month, so let’s make it fun: the maker of each monster that I feature this month will get a free Gobbledyghost PDF pattern!

Let’s see your wildest wooliest weirdos!

The Happy Cupcake’s Frolicking Fairies

This troupe of sweet garden fairies made by The Happy Cupcake look perfectly pleased with their porcine parade!

tinybride_happycupcake

According to her Ravelry project page, Ms. Cupcake modified the Tiny Bride pattern from Teeny-Tiny Mochimochi to make her little fairies, and their ride appears to be from the Pigs with Wigs pattern in Knitting Mochimochi.

I love how each fairy is rocking her own flowery style!

tinybride_happycupcake2

You may remember that this knitter was also one of the winners in our Fine Feathered Photo Contest earlier this year—her knitting chickens were inspired!

And speaking of photo contests, I’ve been working on getting sponsors for our big contest coming up soon. We’re mixing it up a bit with the prizes, and I can’t wait to reveal them! The official announcement about that is coming later in October, so stay tuned…
