Gnomes vs Snowmen: The Party Platforms

UPDATE: The vote has happened, and the results are in!

Are you voting tomorrow? If you’re in the US, be sure to get to the polls! And then visit us here in Mochimochi Land, because we’re having an election of our own…

gvs_announce1

It’s gnomes vs snowmen, of course! Which side has your support: the garden party or the frozen chosen? Today we’re outlining their respective platforms, because an informed electorate is essential for an effective democracy. Consider your options carefully, then come back tomorrow and vote for your favorite!

The gnomes of Mochimochi Land hold liberty as their most prized value. Their love of nature and community is a given, but they don’t hesitate to exploit their environment for economic development (and they won’t let an activist snowman or two spoil their plans).

vote4gnomes2

They’re tough on violent crime, but will usually look the other way when it comes to possession of illegal substances (particularly mushrooms). And public nudity would be encouraged in a gnome administration, as long as you kept your hat and beard on.

The snowmen of Mochimochi Land embody the 21st-century progressive spirit. Their biggest concern is global warming: for them, it’s personal! They propose to protect the environment and give the economy a boost by promoting eco-friendly modes of transportation.

vote4snowmen1

Community building is important to the snowmen, and they regularly gather to build new constituents when their numbers dwindle during the warm months. And while these guys may seem like softies, they’re actually rather strong on defense.

vote4snowmen2

There is one thing that both gnomes and snowmen agree on: now is a good time to donate to the Red Cross to help with hurricane relief.

Now that you see where they stand on the issues, be sure to come back tomorrow for our official vote. The future of Mochimochi Land is in your hands!

Gnomes and Snowmen (and me!) Headed for VK Live

Vogue Knitting Live is coming to NYC again next weekend!! I’ll be there, and I’m even bringing a couple of armies with me…

gvs_opening3

You’ll be able to find me and my Gnomes vs Snowmen in the Art Gallery area of the Marketplace, which is open to the public on Saturday and Sunday, January 14th and 15th (with a preview for VK Live attendees on the evening of the 13th). I’ll also have books and kits for sale there, including a super-secret new kit! You’ll have to stop by to find out what it is.

Aside from my own display, you’ll be able to find me at the Lion Brand booth at 6 pm on Friday, January 13th, where I’ll be doing a Q&A. Then on Sunday the 15th I’ll be doing a book signing at the Knitty City booth at 11 am.

I can’t wait to see lots of familiar faces and meet many more knitters too. Please stop by and say hi if you’ll be there!

Gnomes vs Snowmen Photos

So this is the last week of Gnomes vs Snowmen!

I took some photos of the installation last week, which I’m excited to finally share here. I’m hoping to take better ones before the show ends (this Friday is the last day), but for now here’s a look at some fun bits of the big battle!

WARNING: These photos contain adorable knitted violence and nudity.

A tragic accident kind of spoils the day, and a pleasant afternoon of naked bathing is rudely interrupted…

Gnomes and Snowmen discover that friendship is almost as fun as fighting!

Soon the two armies will pack up and call a real timeout, but until Friday you can see the installation at gallery hanahou in NYC! A complete show catalog can be downloaded at the gallery website.

Thank you to gallery hanahou, Pictoplasma, and Cascade Yarns for their help making this show happen!

Gnomes vs Snowmen Opens Thursday!

It’s almost time for the big fight! My new show, Gnomes vs Snowmen, opens this Thursday at gallery hanahou in NYC. It’s been an exhausting two months-plus putting together this show, but for me, it might be my most exciting project to date.

The show is made up of 45 foot-long panels that will be exhibited along the walls of the gallery. Here’s a little sneak peek of two of them!

You can see a few more pieces in the pre-sale catalog PDF.

If you’re in the NYC area, I hope to see you at the reception (6-8 pm this Thursday), or stop by while the show is up through November 18th.

Gnomes and Snowmen vs Me

My Gnomes vs. Snowmen show is just about three weeks away now, and I’m in full adrenaline mode trying to stay on top of the work I need to do for it. Here’s a look at my primary work station over the past week:

gvs_progress1

The contraption in the foreground is my newest love, a knitting machine! I finally took the plunge and got the Silver Reed LK 150 model that’s available from the Lion Brand Yarn Studio. It has pretty much transformed how I think about knitting, at least knitting that I have to get done really fast.

I’m going to have to blog about it in more detail later, because I need to get back to knitting right now!

Oh, I’ve received a few requests for the Tiny Pumpkin pattern. I wish it was something that I could publish before Halloween, but I have to be realistic about what I can take on this month. (I already have a big list of projects to work on once I finish the show.) But I promise that you haven’t seen the last of Tiny Pumpkin! In the meantime, don’t forget that I put a free pattern for candy corn on the blog last year. They’re zero calories!

Gnomes vs. Snowmen this November in NYC

I’m super-excited to announce that I’m working on a new solo show for the fall!

gvs_announce1

“Gnomes vs. Snowmen: The Battle for Mochimochi Land” will open November 3rd at gallery hanahou in NYC. The installation will be an epic knitted battle scene between two of my favorite characters. Lots of cuteness and chaos is promised, with a cast of hundreds!

The show will be part of the Character Walk for the upcoming Pictoplasma Festival in NYC, but it’s also open to everyone through November 18th.

If you’re in the NYC area, I hope to see you at the opening on November 3rd, at 6-8 pm (RSVP to info@galleryhanahou.com). I’ll also be sharing lots of pics from the show here on the blog.
