Don’t Forget to Enter!

The deadline for entries in the 2012 Mochimochi Photo Contest is almost upon us! Be sure to add your photos of Mochimochi knits to our Flickr group by Monday, December 3rd.

If you have some knitted guys you’d like to enter but you’re feeling stumped about the photography, it’s really simple to take a good photo!

pc12_remind

It always helps to use indirect natural light, and set your camera on a tripod or something else (like a stack of books) to keep it steady and prevent blurriness. If you’re shooting something tiny, you might want to use the macro setting that’s on many cameras. (It usually looks like a tulip icon.)

I also think it’s helpful to make up a story in your head about what your mochis are doing, so that they can take on a life of their own in your photo. Show them doing something, and not just posing! And don’t be discouraged if your photos don’t look professional—we’re looking for fun and originality more than something that would hang in a gallery.

Good luck! See full contest details.

Win this Weird Needle Felting Kit

You’ve been thinking about entering the Mochimochi Photo Contest, but you need that last little push to convince you that it’s worth the effort. May I present this funny Japanese felting kit!

pc12_sponge

Like the Rilakkuma soap dispenser (which this will go perfectly with), the kit will go to one of the winners of the photo contest! Needle felting is probably a universal language, so I figure the winner will be washing their dishes with quirky new friends in no time.

You have until December 3rd to submit your entries, so photographing your mochis could be a perfect after-Thanksgiving project this weekend! See full contest details.

Win this Rilakkuma Soap Dispenser

Just one more reason to enter the Mochimochi Photo Contest: The first-place winner gets this adorable Rilakkuma soap dispenser!

(You know I couldn’t help throwing in some Rilakkuma cuteness again this year.)

This guy and more cute Japanese stationery and other goodies will go to the top winners, along with Knit Picks gift certificates and Potter Craft books! Deadline is December 3rd, so you have a little less than two weeks to get your entries submitted. See full contest details.

Win Knit Picks Gift Certificates!

How are your Mochimochi Photo Contest entries coming? Last week I revealed the awesome collection of Potter Craft books that our top US winner will get. (I’m already feeling kinda jealous!) Today I’m giving a big shoot-out to our other big sponsor, Knit Picks!

For the fifth year in a row, Knit Picks is providing gift certificates to the top three winners of our photo contest (regardless of where they live): the first-place winner gets a $50 gift certificate, and the second and third-place winners each get a $10 gift certificate. Knit Picks normally only ships to the US and Canada, but if a winner lives outside the country, I’ve arranged it with Knit Picks so that they can still get their goodies.

I’m sure many of you are already big fans of Knit Picks, but let me tell you what I personally dig about them.

I have a whole drawer full of their fingering-weight Palette yarn, which I use for many of my tiny knits—like the new Tiny Fall collection!

pc12_knitpicks1

It comes in a huge variety of gorgeous colors, so it’s perfect for picking just the right yarn for a project.

On the opposite end of the size spectrum is Jumbo Gnome, who I made using Knit Picks’ Biggo yarn!

pc12_knitpicks3

I loved how easy Biggo was to work with and just how soft and happy it felt in my hands.

And my swift and ball winder have helped me wind hundreds of skeins of yarn over the past three years!

pc12_knitpicks2

Of course that’s just a small bit of what Knit Picks has to offer—check out their website for tons more yarn, needles, books, and their blog and podcast. Then remember to enter our photo contest by December 3rd for a chance to win yourself a gift certificate!

Win these Books from Potter Craft

Have you been working on your entries for the Mochimochi Photo Contest?

Last week I featured the first place photos from the previous five years for some inspiration. Now that you’re inspired, I want to get you motivated! What better way to do that than with prizes?

We’re happy to make the contest open to Mochimochi knitters around the world every year, but this year we have a special prize just for the top winner in the US…

pc12_pottercraft

Eight beautiful books published by Potter Craft! It’s been a privilege to work with the wonderful people at Potter Craft on Super-Scary Mochimochi and Teeny-Tiny Mochimochi (and also my top-secret next book!), and I’m psyched that they have offered to supply this prize for our photo contest. I’m always impressed with the quality of their books, and I handpicked the above selection as titles that looked perfect for a well-rounded crafter of cute stuff. Check out the Potter Craft website to see all of their books, which you can find in bookstores around the world.

This prize is going to our top winner who is living in the US (who will also win other prizes, depending on her or his placement in the contest), but we have lots of great prizes this year going to winners regardless of country, including gift certificates and cute Japanese stationery (more on that soon!).

A big thank-you to Kim Small and Potter Craft!

The deadline for entries is December 3rd, so you have tons of time to enter! See full contest details.

Knit-spiration from Past Photo Contest Winners

If you missed last week’s announcement, the 2012 Mochimochi Photo Contest is now officially open for entries!

It’s hard to believe that this is our 6th year to be holding this contest—wow! To get everyone excited and inspired, let’s take a look back at the first-place winners from the past five years.

The winner of our first photo contest way back in 2007 was Mochimochi Land Scene by jenifleur!

mochimochilandscene

We loved how she imagined Mochimochi Land as a soft and happy place!

In 2008, our winner combined two Mochimochi patterns in an original way. It was Slug Checkers by denise.y.cheung!

win08_checkers

(Looks like way more fun than regular old checkers, don’t you think?)

The winner in 2009 went for colorful cuteness: Batty Bats by DutchMoeder!

pc09_sf10

The 2010 winner created a scene that really told a story. Chaos of Snowmen by flightsofyarn:

pc10_sf20

This photo really got me thinking about all the different things I can make my snowmen do with just a little embroidery.

And that brings us to last year’s winner, who went for color and composition (combined with plenty of cuteness). Snowmen! by TheBon!

pc11_sf2

It’s interesting to see how the winners seem to alternate between an emphasis on narrative and formal qualities. And I also just realized that all of these photos feature more than one toy…. Food for thought as you plan the photos you’ll enter in this year’s contest. The deadline is December 3rd, so there’s plenty of time to knit and to click! (See full contest details.)

Announcing the 2012 Mochimochi Photo Contest!

UPDATE: Congratulations to our winners!

pc12_announce

Got yarn, needles, and a camera? It’s now officially time to enter the 6th annual Mochimochi Photo Contest!

Once again, we’re looking for the cutest, funniest, most interesting photos of Mochimochi Land toys. All you have to do to enter is upload your photo(s) to the Mochimochi Friends group on Flickr by Monday, December 3rd.

Winners will receive adorable goodies from Japan and amazing prizes from our generous sponsors Knit Picks and Potter Craft!

pc12_knitpicks

Eligibility

This contest is open to knitters worldwide. To be eligible, your photo must contain at least one knitted toy made from a Mochimochi Land pattern. This can be a pattern from the Mochimochi Shop, a pattern from one of the Mochimochi books (Knitting Mochimochi, Teeny-Tiny Mochimochi, or Super-Scary Mochimochi), or one of the free patterns on the Mochimochi Blog. The pattern may be modified, but not beyond recognition from the original design.

Note that we’re looking for humor, cuteness, and originality—not necessarily the most professional-looking photo. We want everyone to enter!

How to enter

Simply upload your photo(s) to the Mochimochi Friends Flickr group. If you don’t have a Flickr account, it is free and easy to register (though we recommend signing up as soon as possible, because it takes a little time for your account to be approved for sharing photos in a group). You can enter as many photos as you want, within reason.

(All photos uploaded since the deadline of the 2011 photo contest last year are already entered in this year’s contest!)

Deadline

The last day to enter the contest is December 3rd, 2012. We’ll announce the semi-finalists shortly thereafter here on the blog, then everyone will be able to vote for their favorites! So be sure to check the blog in December.

Prizes!

First place prize will be a bunch of cute goodies from Japan, a $20 gift certificate to the Mochimochi Shop, and a $50 gift certificate to Knit Picks.

The top winner living in the US will also receive 8 books courtesy of Potter Craft!

pc12_books

Second place prize will be a handful of cute goodies from Japan, a $15 gift certificate to Mochimochi Land, and a $10 gift certificate to Knit Picks.

Third place prize will be a $10 gift certificate to Mochimochi Land and a $10 gift certificate to Knit Picks.

So get those needles clicking and those cameras snapping!

Tiny Baby Bunnies Contest Winners!

Thank you so much to everyone who entered our Tiny Baby Bunnies Contest! We were so thrilled to have more than 300 PHOTOS entered, and you all really came through with the creativity: your bunnies were dramatic, educational, and hilarious.

There were so many wonderful entries that we’re going to be featuring many of them throughout the month of April. It was agony choosing just three to be our winners, but we had to narrow it down so that someone could win our prizes, these baskets of beautiful, colorful Koigu yarn. Thank you Koigu!
