A Fine Feathered Photo Contest

Update: The winners have been announced: see them here!

I’m thrilled to announce this year’s springtime photo contest, this time sponsored by Spud & Chloë!

feathercontest_announce1

Springtime is for the birds: they’re hatching, they’re singing songs, they’re building nests. But the birds in Mochimochi Land do way more. For this Fine Feathered Photo Contest, we want to see what surprising things YOUR mochimochi birds are doing.

Choose one or more of these feathered mochis to knit: Tiny Chickens, Tiny Hatchlings, or Tiny Perching Pigeons.

feathercontest_announce2

These itty-bity projects all knit up really quickly, so that allows lots time for them to get into all sorts of strange and funny situations: maybe your little birds are learning to fly an airplane, or are putting on a Broadway musical, or are relaxing in the most luxurious birdbath ever—let your imagination take flight! Show us what your little guys are doing with a single photo or a series of photos uploaded to the Mochimochi Friends group on Flickr with the photos tagged feathercontest13.

The top three winners will each receive a selection of soft and beautiful Spud & Chloë Fine yarn. It’s perfect for knitting all sorts of teeny-tiny mochis!

The deadline for entries is April 29th.

CONTEST DETAILS

Eligibility

Knitters from all countries are welcome to enter! To be eligible, your photo(s) must contain at least one Tiny Chicken, Tiny Hatchling, or Tiny Perching Pigeon made from the Mochimochi Land pattern. The pattern may be modified, but not beyond recognition from the original design.

How to enter

Simply add your photo(s) to the Mochimochi Friends Flickr group, and tag them with feathercontest13. If you don’t have a Flickr account, it is free and easy to register (though we recommend signing up as soon as possible, because it takes a little time for your account to be approved for sharing photos in a group).

Your entry can be a single photo or a series of photos, but please limit the total number of photos to 6. (In the case of a series, please number the titles.) Photos entered in this contest will not be eligible for the 2013 Mochimochi Photo Contest this fall.

Judging

Winners will be picked by us at Mochimochi Land, but the Flickr pool is open to be seen by everyone. We will be focusing on creativity in this contest, and not just looking for pretty images.

Deadline

The last day to enter the contest is April 29, 2013. We’ll announce the winners shortly thereafter!

Prizes!

The top three winners each receive a selection of Fine yarn provided by Spud & Chloë: third place gets three skeins, second place gets five skeins, and first place gets ten skeins! Thank you Spud & Chloë!

Winners of the 2012 Mochimochi Photo Contest

The poll has now closed, more than 1800 votes have been tallied, and the results are in for this year’s Mochimochi Photo Contest!

But first, let me take a moment to thank each of you who participated by adding your photos of Mochimochi knits to our Flickr group. The absolute best thing about Mochimochi Land is seeing all of you make the designs your own and bring them to life in endlessly creative ways. You never cease to surprise and inspire me!

Big thank-yous also go to Knit Picks and Potter Craft for their wonderful prizes this year!

We had the stiffest competition ever this year, with a number of photos that didn’t make the finals that easily could have. John and I would especially like to give a shout-out to Stephanie_055’s Cavemen living the prehistoric life and Ilana Marks’ Love in the Bakery, both of which made us giggle with delight when we first saw them.

And now for our official Judges’ Choice Award, which goes to our favorite photo that didn’t make the top three. It’s knitjvf’s Thriller!

pc12_sf7

We had a hard time even choosing which of this knitter’s entries to put in the semifinals. If you haven’t seen them, be sure to check out her Anne of Green Gables and her Frankenstein wedding too! We are consistently impressed with knitjvf’s (aka Joan’s) work.

And now for our top three winners this year!

In third place, it’s the hilariously spooky Knitted Sofa by JillWatt!

pc12_sf14

Amazing job! Jill wins a $10 gift certificate to Knit Picks, a $10 gift card to the Mochimochi Shop, and these goodies from Japan hand-picked by us!

pc12_japan3

The top two photos were neck and neck all through the time that voting was open. They were literally tied all day Saturday, with votes pouring in for both! By the time all the votes were in Sunday night, one came out on top, but it was a really close race the whole way.

In second place is the incredible Knitman’s Sampler by kls1004!

pc12_sf19

Hooray! Kimberly wins a $10 gift certificate to Knit Picks, a $15 gift certificate to the Mochimochi Shop, and these fabulous prizes from Japan!

pc12_japan2

And finally, our first-place winner is the adorable Teamwork by amyh1979!

pc12_sf1

Woohoo! Amy wins a $50 gift certificate to Knit Picks, a $20 gift card to the Mochimochi Shop, this collection of prizes from Japan…

pc12_japan1

AND this collection of books from Potter Craft!

pc12_pottercraft

Congratulations to our winners! Again, thank you to our sponsors, and to everyone who participated, both by submitting photos and by voting. You make Mochimochi Land the BEST place to live in!

And it’s not too early to enter next year’s contest! All photos added to the Mochimochi Friends Flickr group will be automatically entered in the 2013 Mochimochi Photo Contest. We already can’t wait for the next one!

Honorable Mentions ’12, Group One

John and I have just gone through all 700+ photos entered in the 2012 Mochimochi Photo Contest last night—it was a late night, as you can imagine! I can honestly say that this was the best overall batch in Mochimochi Land history. The photos were bursting with creativity in the form of fun pattern mods, hilarious stories, and imaginative concepts. It sounds cliché, but we love them all and they are all winners to us!

After much hand-wringing and a few tears, we managed to narrow down the photos to 20 honorable mentions and 20 semifinalists. Today and tomorrow we will feature our honorable mentions, in no particular order.

Without further ado, here is our first group of awesome honorable mentions—after the jump!

Continue reading “Honorable Mentions ’12, Group One”

Thanks for the Photos!

The 2012 Mochimochi Photo Contest is now closed for entries. Thank you to everyone who entered! We ended up with more than 7 HUNDRED entries this time—a new record!

pc12_flickr

Even if you didn’t get around to entering this year, you can still participate! This is what happens now: John and I will go though ALL of the entries and narrow them down to 20 honorable mentions and 20 semifinalists. We’ll be posting the honorable mentions here soon, and soon after that we’ll start posting the semifinalists in two batches. That’s where all of you come in! We’ll use your feedback in the comments to determine our 10 finalist photos, and then everyone will get to cast ballots on those final 10 to determine our top winners.

So I hope you’ll check back here frequently in the next couple of weeks, and help us pick the big winners! (Although they’re all winners to us, no question about it!)
