Free Pattern: Tiny Nosey Fish

This is an intermediate-level BONUS pattern from Adventures in Mochimochi Land, now available from book sellers everywhere. (Signed copies are available from the Mochimochi Shop!)

noseyfish1

There are many fish in the sea, including some really funny looking ones! In Adventures in Mochimochi Land, a certain species of long-snouted fish can be seen sniffing out the fishiest candidate in an muddy debate and following their noses when casting votes in the underwater election.

noseyfish2

Combine with the other sea creatures from the book (plus tiny fish and mermaids from Teeny-Tiny Mochimochi), to fill out your knitted aquarium! (You do have a knitted aquarium, right?)

You’ll need:
—Fingering-weight yarn in one color, and small amount of black
—Set of size 1 US (2.25mm) double-pointed needles
—Stuffing
—Tapestry needle

Note:
—The finished project is very small and is not suitable for children aged three and under.
—A list of pattern abbreviations can be found here.

Pattern (worked back to front)

Cast on 7 stitches onto one DPN to work flat.
Row 1: Knit.
Row 2: K2tog, k3, k2tog (5 sts).
Row 3: Knit.
Row 4: K2tog, k1, k2tog (3 sts).
Instead of turning for the next row, slide the stitches to the right end of the needle to work as an I-cord.
Row 5: (work as I-cord) [kfb] 3 times (6 sts).
Divide the stitches onto 2 DPNs to continue working in a round.
Rnds 6-9: Knit (4 rnds).
Rnd 10: [M1, k2] 3 times (9 sts).
Redistribute the stitches onto 3 DPNS (continue working in a round).
Rnds 11-26: Knit, stuffing the piece as you go (16 rnds).
Rnd 27: [K2tog, k1] 3 times (6 sts).
Place the stitches onto 2 DPNS (continue working in a round).
Rnd 28: K2tog, k2, k2tog (4 sts).
Place the stitches onto one DPN.
Rnds 29-34: Knit 6 rows of I-cord.
Rnd 35 (work as I-cord): [K2tog] twice (2 sts).
Break the yarn and draw it tightly through the stitches with a tapestry needle.

With black yarn, embroider the eyes onto either side of the body with 2 small stitches for each, placed 3 stitches back from where the I-cord “snout” begins.

Fins (make 2)
Turn the body upside down, and pick up and knit 2 stitches, placed just below and 2 stitches behind one eye.

noseyfish3

Turn, then work [kfb] twice (4 sts).
Bind off the stitches.

Finishing

Weave in the loose ends.
