Someone recently reminded me that I had promised to knit a giraffe.
So here is my giraffe:
A version with a few (white) spots is in the works. But I actually like the simplicity of this version, even if it would be teased by any real giraffe that came its way. Poor little spotless giraffe!
This toy also gave me the opportunity to do a little “hair” embellishment that seemed somewhat vintage to me, though maybe it’s still often used and I just haven’t noticed it.
By the way, the books in the photos have been sitting in these piles for weeks, waiting to be taken to the Salvation Army. Of those pictured, I recommend The Alienist and The Blind Assassin (actually barely cropped out of the pictures) as good summer reads.
What a lovely little thing!!! :D He doesn’t need spots… he looks lovely as he is… though it’d be cute to see one with white spots :D
Love your giraffe. He’s perfect the way he is. When do you release the pattern to us knitters then? I could do few of them for one of my charities (with your blessing of course). I’m serious, by the way.
Thank you, Alejandra!
Faye, I would love for you to knit giraffes for charity. The pattern should be ready within the next month or so.
I need to start looking at your blog when my daughter is asleep. She loves it. :D
The giraffe is super cute! Also, is that a book about Cheese that I see??
I love his colored hoofs and knobby horns. I especially loved doing Pepto’s footpads, so little Giraffy’s hoofs are nostalgic for me.
And I don’t think the spots are a big deal. Some crocheted on circles would work just as well :). Or this could be the ancestor of all giraffes before they got spots. Oh, this reminds me of Rudyard Kipling’s book of how all the animals were made. I forgot the name of it, but it was a collection of stories. One was how the elephant got a long nose (a crocodile snapped at it and stretched it out), and another how the leopard got it’s spots. Very cute.
Your emboirdered eyes and nostrils are impeccable. I have such respect for embroidered toys. I can never get the damn eyes to look like eyes or even symmetrical!
So cute! Its just perfect! I cant wait for the pattern to come out :)
what a cutie! and i think i know who has his spots… remember the spotted elephant from the island of misfit toys?
:)
Yay I’m glad people like the giraffe! Keep an eye out for the pattern in my shop.
Jenna, the cheese book is yours, if you’re willing to come pick it up. (It’s pretty heavy…)
If this doesn’t end up in the shop I will die.
Giraffes are my favorite animals. :)
No need to die. It’s coming in a few weeks!
