Creative Cross Stitch

As I mentioned a couple of weeks ago, I’ve been thinking a bit about creating my own cross stitch designs. I don’t know if it’s something I’ll get around to anytime soon, but I’m inspired by these charming samplers that my mother-in-law Bonney made back in the ’90s, substituting their original wording with her own favorite sayings.

And this was way before Subversive Cross Stitch, of course. I like the way that they look so quaint at first glance, but take another look and you get the joke. Even with the humorous words, it’s obvious that Bonney put a lot of time into them and they are something that her family will always treasure.

  1. I used to do a lot of cross stitch before I fell down the rabbit hole of knitting, and I can see how much time went into those. They are lovely, particularly all the amazing shading details on the last one. The last subversive stitching I did was a simple little wall hanging for the pub kitchen my roommate works in, which said (with expletives intact) “F*** you and your side of ranch”

I would love to see some designs from you, since your style is something I adore. I feel some inspiration coming on to do another sampler, along these lines…

  2. They are so cool – amazing contemporary sense of humour. I’ll be interested to see what samplers you come up with.

  3. The last one is especially hilarious! Very creative–and something one would be proud to hang in one’s living room. :)

  4. These are wonderful! I love antique replicas and am amazed at the detail girls used to put into their samplers. Your mother-in-law’s show such creativity and sense of humor.
