I’ve been looking forward to sharing these adorable pics from Azusa, my friend and colleague who was nice enough to test the pattern for Tubby a while back.
Don’t you love her Tubby’s multicolor bubbles? She produced her own variegated effect by mixing shades of blue yarn together. Very clever.
Azusa decided that Tubby was the one who needed a bath!
I was holding off on posting these photos because I wanted to wait for the debut of Azusa’s Etsy shop! Another heart knitter, Christine added funny little eyes to hers, making him look kind of like a heart-shaped alien!

Martina knitted up this basketful of felted goodness for no one in particular, according to her Ravelry page about the project. I bet she can find some lucky recipients by next Thursday though. Oh! Only a week until Valentine’s? I have some serious thinking to do myself…

I’ve been really happy to see tons of people recently making hearts from the free pattern I posted a year ago (146 projects on Ravelry!). This simple pattern has taken on many cute, fun, and beautiful incarnations in different knitters’ hands, so I’m going to share some of my favorites in the days leading up to Valentine’s Day.

Tubby is finally ready to make a splash in the Mochimochi Shop!

This is Charleston.
I’m very much a beginner at sewing, so I was amazed that I could accomplish a cute toy in one day. With the help of my mother-in-law, of course!
His bottom, which I had to sew shut by hand, is a little bunchy…
But I think he’s totally cute!
We made him from this McCall’s pattern:
It was a little confusing, because there were different pieces for doggy 1 and doggy 2, but they looked like the same dog to me.
Anyway, a dog got made end the end, and I feel like I’ve accomplished my “argg out of comfort zone” challenge for the month.
I’m excited to talk about an event last Friday that by design I couldn’t mention until it was all over!
A few months ago I was contacted by Sile (pronounced Sheila) at knit-one-one, a California knitting studio that specializes in knitting lessons and events. They were interested in making Hayden the Haystack at their next Magical Mystery Knitting Party, an event where instructor Kate reads a pattern aloud for the attendees to knit up, and everyone tries to guess what they’re making throughout the process.
Though I couldn’t be there in person as I would have liked to, hiding behind a plant to watch the evening unfold, Sile was nice enough to send me the play-by-play and great photos right away!
Apparently there was a little confusion over the color of yarn to bring, but I think red makes a nice fall haystack, don’t you think?
Some of the guesses throughout the evening were: leg warmers for dogs, a banana cover, and a chew toy.
Even after the Haydens got stuffed, Sile says, people were still guessing. Then she offered up a clue about European painters, and Ellen, one of the guests, shouted out “Haystack!”
The haystacks look like they were having a little party themselves!
I was so thrilled to have my Hayden be a mystery knit for one night. Thank you Sile!
