Toys Meet Prizes

Not one, but TWO of the winners in the 2008 Mochimochi Photo Contest recently shared photos of the toys in their winning photos meeting the prizes they won!

kayk’s Bobs halted their dance party to inspect an unusually small capybara…

And then they took their new plastic tofu blocks for a ride!

And denise.y.cheung’s Stackable Cats and Slugs ditched their game of checkers to check out their big box o’ goodies from Japan!

(I especially love the cat and slugs reading the little note I included in the package.)

I’m happy to see that someone’s having fun with the prizes!

Pretty Odd

I was summoned for jury duty recently (it involved waiting for a few hours and not getting my name called), so I had occasion to walk around the vicinity of New York’s City Hall. There are a surprising number of odd lots stores in the area. Why, I don’t know, but I stepped into one out of curiosity.

(I apologize for the bad photo quality; my camera phone was scratched a while back when it fell out of my purse during an airline check-in and skidded across the floor.)

This particular store had a generous supply of the usual: candles, small gadgets, Panasonic batteries, and a random assortment of packaged foods.

I thought these Spider Man piggy banks were interesting. Or rather, the sheer number of them was interesting. Are there that many people in this world who desire a Spider Man piggy bank?

Then, toward the back of this brightly-lit store was a section of… Adult DVD Movies?

I partly convinced myself that the “Adult” in “Adult DVD Movies” means “not G or PG-rated DVD movies,” but I still wasn’t going to get close enough to the giant pile to read the titles.

Couches

Remember how I was making a couch? I made two!

Of course, I couldn’t resist giving them a few dust bunnies…

It was fun using a color pattern for these. Trying to think of other toys to do that with.

These one-of-a-kind couches will be in the “Plush You” show at Double Punch in San Francisco in November. Show info to come later!

Update: Thank you to Kristen for posting on the Plush You blog!

New Mochimochi Logo

If you haven’t noticed, there’s a shiny new logo at the top of the blog!

What you see is about the extent of my abilities using Adobe Illustrator, but I’m pretty happy with it. (Is it obvious that the Os are Uh-Ohs?)

Update: Oops I forgot to mention that using the Uh-Ohs in the logo was all John’s idea. Thank you John!

Bright Spark by Kate Jeffery

Kate Jeffery (aka Disco Smurf), who knitted up the cute Captain Capacitor I posted here a couple of weeks ago, has now created her own electronics-inspired pattern: Bright Spark the Light Bulb!

Isn’t it super? This is a free pattern available for download through Ravelry. Or, if you don’t have a Ravelry account (why don’t you?), you can also download the pattern here.

Looking forward to seeing more designs from Kate! (Perhaps a compact fluorescent Bright Spark??)

Neutral Milk Hotel, Revisited

I found out yesterday that my unhappy hard drive, which was being tinkered with by the second set of professionals, is not recoverable after all, and I’ve lost about a year’s worth of data. Fun!

It’s fine really—when I finally accessed what I actually lost, there’s little that cannot be replaced or forgotten about. I now have my computer back with a new hard drive, and one of the first things did was go back through my old CDs so that I could have something to listen to after three music-less weeks.

intheaeroplaneGoing through my college-era albums, I realized that I hadn’t had Neutral Milk Hotel on my computer in a long time. Remember them? If you kind of do, it’s a good time for a re-listen. And if you don’t remember them, you should get the CD (or download from iTunes and back it up for goodness’ sake). In The Aeroplane Over the Sea is a beautiful listen, with trumpets, lo-fi noise, and references to The Diary of Anne Frank. Hearing it now makes me think of it as a precursor to some of The Decemberists’ better songs—it’s thoroughly situated in the late 1990s (Neutral Milk Hotel was part of the Elephant Six collective), but the sad and touching images it evokes are from an earlier era.

I’m not the first person to revisit In the Aeroplane Over the Sea this year—Taylor Clark wrote about Jeff Magnum in a Slate article on the 10th anniversary of the album back in February. Clark wrote about how Magnum bowed out of the music scene after releasing Aeroplane, with no signs of returning. All the more reason to appreciate this album.

giolou’s Pundits

Tester giolou (of the Sails vs. Slugs baseball series) did a swell job trying out the Pundit Babies pattern for me before I released it last week. I was happy to see pics of her adorable results!

She used Lamb’s Pride worsted yarn for her stout little mascots.

The reading material she posed them on might give away giolou’s personal leanings, but she claims to love both of these guys equally!

Thank you to giolou, and also Oiyi, Jessica, and Hannah for testing!
