Denise’s Sculpey Grass

I was a huge Sculpey user when I was in high school—that’s really when I was figuring out that I loved to make three-dimensional characters. So when Denise sent me this photo of her little Sculpey grassies (inspired by my free pattern Grass), I got all full-circle nostalgic about it!

It’s also exciting to see a Mochimochi designs rendered into a non-knitted medium. I would love to see more of that!

Denise was also the winner of our 2nd Mochimochi Photo Contest back in 2008, with her adorable photo of Stackable Cats playing slug checkers. It still makes me giggle!

Balloons and Baboons to the Moon

This weekend my mom and I were enjoying a relaxing drink at a bar when we were startled by a loud BANG that came from the next table over. It was a twisty animal balloon, sitting by itself, that had popped for no apparent reason. (It had come with a group of kids, because this is Brooklyn where bars are all ages all the time.)

Balloons are so fascinating—they can be sweet and airy, twisty and violent, goofy or graceful. Here’s my favorite ballon image that I found recently (via Architizer), of one of the first balloons used in the Macy’s Day Parade.

tinyballoons_felix

Felix seems a bit heavier than his helium-filled counterparts of today!

I was happy to read all the many different tiny balloon poems that you all came up with over the weekend—some were charming and cute, some were a little sad, and many were ludicrously funny. (It quickly became obvious that balloons and baboons were meant to be in poems together.)

There were so many great entries that it was impossible to choose just one winner, but in the end, John and I narrowed it down to two.

you are fat and round
full of air and maybe spit
careful of those pins

That sweet balloon haiku was by Rachel! And here’s our other winner:

I had a lovely afternoon
Running with my red balloon
Until I tripped and let it go
It drifted up; left me below

Then dear Anna heard my cries
And felt a tear in her own eyes
So she knitted all the night and day
For yarn balloons don’t fly away

That one was by Johnna! (And I promise I didn’t pick it just because it had my name in it, although that was a flattering touch!)

Both of these poets win the PDF pattern for Jumbo Gnome

If you haven’t please check out the other wonderful entries in the comments on Friday’s post. Stay tuned for a little more fun with balloons this week!

Tiny Balloons

Update: See the two winning poems here!

I’ve had balloons on the brain all week! I think it has something to do with the hot weather we’ve had recently. After taking my new obsession to Pinterest for a few days, I decided to make my own version.

A little handful of happiness!

Let’s have a tiny balloon caption contest, shall we? There’s something poetic about balloons, so I want to hear your tiny balloon poems in the comments (one comment per person please). I’ll pick my favorite on Monday, and the winner will get….

The PDF pattern for Jumbo Gnome!

OK, show us what rhymes with “balloon!”

Last Day for Mystery Preview Kits!

Update: This promotion has now ended. The new kits will be coming to the Mochimochi shop this fall!

Today (May 31) is your last chance to get a free mystery preview kit from the Mochimochi Shop! All orders of 2 or more kits and/or books today will come with one of these kits.

mysterykits

Order 4 kits and/or books and get two different mystery preview kits; order 6 and you get all 3!

Like all of the Tiny Mochi kits, each contains a pattern for a mini knitted toy and enough fingering-weight yarn and stuffing to make multiples. The mystery kits will debut in the Mochimochi Shop this fall, so this is your last chance to get them for a while.

I’ve been psyched at the enthusiastic response to this special promotion so far. I guess everyone loves a surprise!

Cowboy Zombie by Withmyneedles

Ladies: do you go for plainspoken, outdoorsy types who will love you for your brains? Then Cowboy Zombie just might be the man of your dreams!

tinyzombie_withmyneedles

Withmyneedles made this little green guy, gave him a custom hat, and plunked him down on a “zombiedillo.” Yee-arrrggghh!

(The Tiny Zombie pattern can be found in the Mochimochi Shop as part of the Tiny Collection 4 and also as a kit, and the Tiny Armadillo pattern is in Teeny-Tiny Mochimochi.)

Add your photos of Mochimochi knits to our Flickr group—they’ll might get featured here on the blog, and they’ll automatically be entered in our next photo contest!

Comment number 23, written by Kristen E!

Penny and Jambi were totally my favorites. :) You’re absolutely right – Pee Wee’s Playhouse made Saturday mornings more magical! I miss it!

Congrats, Kristen! May this Fun Pak contain a bit more of that magic for you.

These cards are relatively rare items, so I thought I’d open another Fun Pak and share what’s inside. The contents didn’t disappoint!

Stickers, temporary tattoos, one of those hologram image-thingies… and thankfully, no stale piece of 24-year-old gum. I hope the winner’s (AAAAAAAAHHH) Fun Pak is just as fun!

Inspiration: Pee-Wee’s Playhouse (plus Giveaway!)

Update:
The giveaway has ended, but you can see what’s in the Fun Pak here!

There was a time when Saturday mornings were magical, thanks in large part to Pee-Wee’s Playhouse. Even now, I still get a little thrill when I hear the first few notes of the theme song, which begins slowly and mysteriously before breaking into gleeful weirdness.

peewee_chairyI almost don’t know where to start when talking about how this show inspires me. Well, yes I do: the anthropomorphized puppet objects have a naive brilliance that I think I recognized even as a kid: Pee-wee’s chair is named Chairy and gives him hugs with her armrests, Clocky tells everyone when it’s time to play different games (all of them bizarre), and the Mr. Window tells us who’s about to ring the doorbell. (The door is just a door, though.) It’s pretty obvious that much of the inspiration for my own Grouchy Couch, Error, and Flushie (among others) came from Pee-Wee’s friends.

And then there’s the animation. I remember getting excited about visits to the ant farm, a world-within-a-world that the show occasionally featured. And the Penny shorts combine a happy claymation style with the almost dreamlike free-association stories of a chatty young girl.

Of course, Pee-Wee himself is the manic man-child who accompanies us through this weird world that is his playhouse. He may “scream real loud” more often than I would tolerate in a real person, but his over-the-top personality wins me over because his innocence is more feral than cloying.

I think the thing I love the most about Pee-Wee’s Playhouse is the way it takes mundane objects and activities that we’re all familiar with and makes them strange and thrilling. Maybe that’s how kids see the world anyway to some extent, but this version is just the right balance of playful and twisted.

I bet many of you are Pee-Wee fans like me, and so I thought I’d share some nostalgia for the show with a special giveaway! I came across someone selling old pop-culture trading cards at the Brooklyn Flea a few weeks back, and I couldn’t resist picking up some Pee-Wee’s Playhouse “Funpaks.” These are the real thing! Original 1988 cards made by Topps; according to the wrapper, they include 1 sheet of tattoos, 3 picture cards, 1 sticker, 1 wiggle toy, and 1 activity card.

Leave a comment by midnight on Monday (May 28th) sharing your favorite thing about Pee-Wee’s Playhouse (or one of the Pee-Wee movies, or even the more recent stage show). On Tuesday I’ll pick a random winner, who will get their very own Pee-Wee Funpak!
