The Mochi of Oz

Even though it didn’t make it into the finals, Hippycritical’s Dorothy and her friends got lots of love in the semifinalist round of the photo contest.

What you probably didn’t know is that Hippycritical (aka Aimee) made a whole mochi-fied cast of characters from The Wizard of Oz!

Wicked Witch and her Monkeys

Munchkins (knitted on size 0 needles)

And the Yellow Brick Road, of course!

You can see more photos from the series on Aimee’s Flickr page. Kudos to her for such creativity and clever pattern mods!

Luv-able & Hug-able Pics

So much is going on this month, but I’m finally getting around to posting a couple of photos from this year’s “Luv-able & Hug-able” plush show at gallery hanahou!

I went to the opening on December 1st, and I was happy to see so many awesome plushes to see, of all types and species! Unfortunately I did not think ahead—I only had my phone with me to take photos with, and that stopped working after just a few shots because I had stupidly filled it up with music and it quickly ran out of space…

luvhug11_1

The Cotton Monster “Squidys” hanging from the ceiling tied everything together very nicely!

luvhug11_2

Aren’t those foxes by Mimi Kirchner just the coolest? I also loved all the details on the plushes by Them Dollz. You can see my Twiggins hanging out on the back wall!

I couldn’t resist buying a couple of small plushes myself, but I’ll resist posting their photos for now because they’ll probably become Christmas gifts and I don’t want to spoil the surprise…

Lots of the plushes in the show have found homes now, but lots are still available! You can download the PDF catalog at the gallery website. And the show is up through January 6th—definitely worth stopping by in person if you’re in NYC!

Tiny Wreath Needs a Smaller Door

tinywreath_door

Just how did this ridiculously tiny Tiny Wreath come to be?

A knitter allergic to holiday greens
Wanted a wreath for her door.
She started to knit like a knitting machine,
Sitting while knitting some more.
But when it was finished
Excitement diminished
As she went berserk as she looked at her work:
Instead of using a proper-size yarn
She had knitted with finger-weight yarn!
This wreath, on her door, could barely be seen!
So in frustration,
In pure desperation,
She decided to knit a nativity scene.

That awesome Tiny Wreath poem is by Lydia! For her very merry caption, she wins this adorable holiday tape measure from Tomo and Timo!

Thank you to Tomo for supplying the prize this week! Check out her Etsy shop to see more very cute tape measures, which would make perfect stocking stuffers for crafty types!

Today’s Tiny Mochi was inspired by our first place winner in the photo contest!

This little guy might not show up so well on your front door, but he still wants to bring holiday cheer somehow!

It’s time for a Tiny Wreath caption contest! Leave your caption in the comments to this post (one per person please), and we’ll pick our favorite on Monday to win…

Before we announce the winners, I’d like to give a HUGE thank-you to everyone who submitted photos in the Flickr group over the past 12 months. I am continuously amazed at the time, talent, and creativity that go into the amazing photos that you share with us, and seeing what you do to make Mochimochi your own gives me much-needed inspiration and motivation to keep designing. It wouldn’t be half as fun without all of you!

OK, now for our winners!

We’ll start with JUDGES’ CHOICE—this is a photo that didn’t make it into the top three, but that John and I thought really captured the spirit of Mochimochi Land. This year, we actually had TWO photos that we wanted to honor:
