Mochimochi at Maker Faire in Queens Sept 25

makerfaire_nyc

Maker Faire, which is produced by the supermen and women at MAKE and CRAFT, is coming to Queens this month! I’ve never been to a Maker Faire before, so I’m really excited. And I’m extra excited because I’ll be there with a display of my knitted toys!

You’ll be able to find me, my book, and my toys at the New York Hall of Science library all day on Saturday, September 25th. I’ll also be doing a demo at 2 pm at the CRAFT booth.

This should be a huge and very fun event, so I hope you’ll come out if you’re in the area!

Hide Your Yarn!

Thank you for all the awesome captions for Tiny Zombie! 67 is a lot to choose from.

Many of you included a reference to Tiny Zombie’s hunger for brains.

But what he really wants are…

Skeins…SKEINS…

Thank you for supplying the winning caption, Elise! Now I have to go hide all my yarn from this guy.

Opening October 7: Greetings from Mochimochi

Update! The gallery will be open 2-4 pm on Saturday, October 30th for a tea party and trunk show!

Here it is, the official info for my show this October in NYC!

Greetings from Mochimochi

a weird world of fun and chaos hand-knitted by Anna Hrachovec

October 7 – 29, 2010
Opening reception: Thursday, October 7, 7-9 p.m. – RSVP info@galleryhanahou.com

gallery hanahou
611 Broadway, Suite 730, NYC

In her first solo show, craft artist Anna Hrachovec stretches the possibilities of knitting as a medium to create an expansive and wacky landscape installation. Crash-landed aliens, rat-infested skyscrapers, giant ants, and everything else that comprises the 8-foot installation is entirely hand-knitted by the artist, who used 200 balls of yarn and more than a million stitches to make it all come to life. And just for fun, the piece includes a working model train – converted into a silly knitted monster, of course!

Some of the elements in the piece are based on designs in Anna’s 2010 book of knitted toy patterns, Knitting Mochimochi.

If you are in the NY area, please join me for the opening on October 7th!

DIY Deity

I haven’t yet shown who will be inhabiting the world that I’m creating for my upcoming show at gallery hanahou. Among other creatures, I thought this world needed at least one god.

showprep_9.8

In this case, the god is modeled after the populace, and not the other way around. Only 20 percent of these little gray guys will believe in the god, and the god will return the favor by being only 20 percent benevolent.

I just finished making his limbs, and I’m in the middle of knitting a big cloud for him to sit on. Next he will get an elvis-style pompadour hairdo.

Tiny Hippo

Today’s Tiny Thing comes by request from some of the knitters in the class at Lion Brand that I taught last Sunday.

tinyhippo

Winning caption: Tiny hippo likes to wallow in unwashed cereal bowls and abandoned coffee mugs. He/she says milk is good for the skin.

(Thanks for the funny caption, onnastick!)

Tiny Hippo needs a cute/funny caption—leave your suggestion in the comments (one per person, please), and I’ll pick a winner of a free pattern Tuesday morning!

Pencils Ready?

So I guess it’s September! Summer always seems to slip by quickly, but this year’s record heats are making me less nostalgic than usual for sticky days. (Fingers crossed that today might just be the last of those!)

It’s back to school time for many, so why not kick off the season with some adorable Petite Pencils made from the pattern in Knitting Mochimochi?

From Greetingarts, Mr. Stubby and his friend look a little ambivalent about this pop quiz.

The pencil made by estars 100 thinks he’s found a clever way to avoid doing homework…

And cupcakefields’ no. 2 is getting right down to business on the first day of class.

I love all of these silly guys! Now I’m thinking I should have made a couple Petite Pencils for my friends who just started grad school. Maybe for midterms!

You can have your own photos of Mochimochi toys appear the gallery by adding them to the Mochimochi Friends group on Flickr.

By the way, we have a couple updates about this year’s Mochimochi Photo Contest: Knit Picks will again be a sponsor with fabulous gift certificates for the winners (yay!), and John will also be traveling to Japan in a few days just to pick up some other cool prizes. (OK, so he’s not making the 13-hour flight just for the photo contest, but he promises to get some neat stuff in between his work at the Tokyo Game Show.)

It’s looking like the deadline for the contest will be November 1st—I’ll make an official announcement later, but until then, you can check out the guidelines for last year’s contest.
