Tiny Penguin and Tiny Santa Kits Now Available

Just added kits for these guys to the Mochimochi Shop!

penguinsantakit1

Each kit comes with the pattern and enough fingering-weight yarn (Cascade Heritage, a wool/nylon blend) and stuffing to make three penguins or two Santas. You’ll just need size 1 US double-pointed needles and a tapestry needle. The kits are an easy way to take tiny knitting on the go, and they also make great gifts for knitters!

All seven kits are available for $12 each in the Mochimochi Shop.

The Tiny Bunnies Movement

I recently heard about a fun new Ravelry group that’s all about spreading happiness through bunnies!

tinybunniesmovement

The Tiny Bunnies Movement is devoted to encouraging knitters to brighten strangers’ days by knitting up miniature bunnies and leaving them with notes for people to find in random places. I love this idea!

One of the recommended patterns to use is my free Tiny Baby Bunnies pattern, and the members have also suggested other patterns in the discussion threads.

EssiHannaMaria is one member who has her bunnies all ready to go.

Right now The Tiny Bunnies Movement is up to 141 members, but I think if more people knew about it, their numbers might soar. I’ll definitely be keeping up with their covert bunny activities!

Lion Brand Yarn Studio Interview

I had such a great time at the Lion Brand Yarn Studio last Thursday! They invited me to give an artist talk (coinciding with my installation) and do a book signing, and although I was nervous to speak in front of 50 people, I think it went well. It’s always a joy to meet knitters and share my crazy take on the craft with them, and I take so much energy back with me from these encounters. (Of course it was wonderful to see some familiar faces there too!)

For those who couldn’t make it out to the talk, here’s an interview that we taped beforehand:

Patty Lyons and all of the staff at the LBYS gave me the warmest welcome, and I even got to hang out with them after the event. It was probably the most lively conversation I’ve ever had with a group of knitters! They are a riot.

Big thank-yous to everyone at the Lion Brand Yarn Studio, and to everybody who came on Thursday!

Tiny Edamame

Winning caption by Emma:

Once they’re boiled they’re no longer soya beans, but has beans.

What do you think it’s like to be tiny boiled soybeans? Leave your caption in the comments, and we’ll pick the one that makes us giggle the most on Monday. The winner gets a free pattern for Ninjabun!

Also: what should be next in the sushi bar set? I’m thinking it has to have some kind of roll, and then maybe another type of nigiri sushi?

Mochimochi at NYC Maker Faire Sept 17

makerfaire2011I’m happy to announce that I’ll again be at the NYC Maker Faire next weekend in Queens! You’ll be able to find me in the library of the Museum of Science on Saturday, Sept 17th—I’m bringing my Teeny-Tiny diorama and I’ll have my new book there too. I’ll also be doing a toy knitting demo at the CRAFT stage at 1 pm on the 17th.

If you haven’t experienced a Maker Faire before, it’s a celebration of creativity that is lots of fun for all ages. Hope to see you there next Saturday!

Rainbow Rainycloud Mobile

How lovely is this Rainycloud mobile that the sisters of Green Eyed Monster made for a kids’ room?

rainycloud_greeneyed

I love how the simple shapes sans eyes and bright colors make for a clean and happy piece. You can see more pretty pics of it on the Green Eyed Monster blog.

As always, if you’ve made something fun from a Mochimochi pattern, please add it to the Mochimochi Friends Flickr group! It will appear on the gallery page, and it will automatically be entered in our next photo contest.

How to: Knitting with Double-Pointed Needles

Knitting with double-pointed needles, or DPNs, is an excellent way to knit 3-dimensional toys with minimal seaming. The needles, which are usually used 4 at a time, take a little getting used to, but it’s really less complicated that it looks! This tutorial will show you the DPN basics when knitting toys.
