Mochimochi Land in 3D

A very cool person named Jess Mireau took these photos at my 2010 show Greetings from Mochimochi. How awesome is this?!

I didn’t even know that they made 3D cameras like this, but Jess tells me that she used one called the Fujifilm W3, on loan from her friend Cory, who has an entire blog dedicated to 3D photos. Jess is an animator herself—you can see her amazing work at jam-i-am.com.

Elf Huddle

It has been decided that the best way to display cute holiday knits is to arrange them in a circle!

Miss Cookie has been knitting these darling guys as holiday gifts for her own special elves. The stripes she added make them extra festive, no? You can get the pattern in the shop on its own or as part of the new Holiday package!

Plinky the Piano

Update: The pattern for Plinky & Plunky is now available!

Last week I dropped everything because I decided on a whim that I just had to knit a piano. Meet Plinky!

Plinky was one of the more challenging knits I’ve undertaken in a while, but I’m pretty happy with how he turned out. I don’t currently have a name for his bench friend, so I’m open to suggestions. (If I use yours, you’ll get the pattern for free!)

I’ll be working on the pattern in the next couple of months!

A Spectrum of Santas

I think we all agree that Bonnie’s winning photo from this year’s Mochimochi Photo Contest was a feat of craft, color, and photography. Here it is again in case you missed it:

Well, this talented knitter recently reprised her Snowman wreath as a spectrum of Santas!!

I might even be more in love with the Santa version! Lots of work went into making all these little guys, but the result is incredible. Here’s another shot.

Sweaty, Serengeti, Spaghetti…Tiny Yeti!

You all made my morning very difficult with so many fantastic Tiny Yeti rhymes to choose from! Fortunately John helped out, and we decided on TWO winners of our Tiny Yet Rhyme-off.

Oh, no! said the tiny white yeti,
I awoke in the wide Serengeti!
The wildebeests here
Have nothing to fear
‘Cause I can’t make a move; I’m too sweaty!

Feeling kind of petty
Went to his mother for aid.

No knitter was he

“White” he cried!

A plethora of berries
Big bright red cherries
All looked to be to his taste.

But the stains they’d impose

The solution however

So she worked both day and night
Though she felt the sweater might
Leave her son quite sweaty.

It was wonderfully svelte
For he was finally able to eat spaghetti!

Oh, I just noticed that both of our winners used “sweaty” to rhyme with Yeti. I guess there’s something about a sweaty yeti that is adorable.

National Knit a Piano Week

A couple of days ago I had the idea to try knitting a piano. Once I got into it, my to-do list for the week went out the window, because now it is National Knit a Piano Week in this household.

Many questions have arisen in the process. What is the best non-boring color for a piano? How many keys should a silly nonrealistic representation of a piano have? And of course: lid or no lid?? (That last one has yet to be resolved.)

In my tiny designs, I aspire to make everything as simple as possible, which is a fun challenge. It’s also fun to go a bit in the opposite direction sometimes, and try to make something that involves some geometry and math. (Not swatching, though. Let’s not get carried away.)

Probably by the end of the week I’ll know if this piano has potential for a pattern, or if it was just a fun experiment in knitted instruments. I’ll keep you updated!
