Give School a Hug

Kristen Rask just sent me photos of my window display at her store!

schmancy_backtoschool1

Schmancy is a super-fun vinyl and plush toy store in downtown Seattle, and I was thrilled when Kristen asked me if I would make something for their window.

As I mentioned previously, I used the Petite Pencil pattern from Knitting Mochimochi in bulky yarn to make the pencils, and I love how they came out so huggable. The piece of paper was a bit of a challenge to design, and the hardest thing was coming up with what the paper would say. I got to thinking about how schools and teachers are dealing with increasingly tighter budgets and demands to do more with less, so I figured school could use a hug!

If you’re in Seattle, I hope you’ll swing by Schmancy in the next few weeks and see it in person.

A big thank-you to Kristen for inviting me to do this and for rigging up the display!

Tiny Mermaid has Standards

Life in the sea might be fine for Tiny Mermaid, but let’s show some cultural sensitivity, shall we?

No, she does NOT want to go out for sushi, thank you very much.

That caption comes from Carrie, who wins a PDF pattern for Puppet Love. Congrats, Carrie!

As I mentioned on Friday, the Tiny Mermaid pattern is in my new book, Teeny-Tiny Mochimochi. So that means new mermaids are starting to appear everywhere! Like this lovely aquatastic mer-lady by Berry Market:

And Sheila gave hers some major mermaid locks:

Share your knits made from Mochimochi patterns in the Mochimochi Friends Flickr group. They’ll be automatically entered in our next photo contest!

I’m just relieved that we haven’t all become Tiny Mermaids after the hurricane!

Winning caption by Carrie:

Maybe you have spotted this watery creature in the pages of Teeny-Tiny Mochimochi?

Tiny Mermaid wouldn’t dream of growing legs and walking on land. But why is she so excited about life in the sea? Leave your caption in the comments, and we’ll pick our favorite on Monday!

The winner will get a free PDF pattern for Puppet Love!

To those in the path of Hurricane Irene: stay safe this weekend!

Errata for Teeny-Tiny Mochimochi

tinychicken_fiddlesticksA few nice people have pointed out mistakes in Teeny-Tiny Mochimochi, and so I’m going to list the corrections here.

If you think you found a mistake, or if you just have a question about one of the patterns, you can email me anytime at info [at] mochimochiland [dot] com. I will keep updating this page.

Tiny Chicken, page 34

Picture B should look like this:

Tiny Ghosts, page 121

Stuffing is not needed for this pattern, so it should not be listed in “other supplies.”

Knitting Abbreviations, page 142

The definition for m1 is missing:

m1 = Pick up the bar that appears between stitches, place it onto the left needle, and knit through its back loop. This will increase by one stitch.

“Get Hooked” at Tante Netty, The Netherlands

According to my web stats, 155 people from The Netherlands visited my website last week. So this news is for my Dutch readers (and others in Europe, too—those countries are all so close together)!

Along with works by Thomas C. Chung, some of my knitted pieces and fiber art will be on exhibit for the next two months at Tante Netty gallery in The Netherlands. “Get Hooked” will open on September 4th and will be on exhibit through October 30th. The gallery is also organizing other urban crafting events around Dutch Design Week at the end of October.

Visitors will be able to see my Giant Yarn Ball in the Sky, along with 50 selected Tiny Things from my blog series.

And knitted paint by Thomas C. Chung will also be on exhibit—I really wish I could see this in person!

Here’s the official show info:

Second exhibition gallery Tante Netty: Get Hooked!

On Sunday September 4th, Tante Netty opens the exhibition Get Hooked! With its second exhibition, the only Dutch offline blog gallery shows the reinvention of the craft of knitting. The exhibition features works of the online popular artists and urban knitters Anna ‘Mochimochi Land’ Hrachovec (US) and Thomas C. Chung (AU). Local urban knitters present their work as well. The exhibition runs from September 4th until October 30st. During Dutch Design Week (October 23/30), visitors can join tag knitting workshops, yarn bombing parties and guerrilla knitting events.

Tante Netty gallery is a really interesting space, so even if you have no way to get there in person, the website is certainly worth a visit!

Tiny Record Player Gets Groovy

It’s so exciting to see the first knits from Teeny-Tiny Mochimochi popping up on Ravelry and Flickr! Here’s an adorable version of Tiny Record Player that Patelyne shared in the Mochimochi Friends group on Flickr.

tinyrecord_patelyne

I love all the little touches that make the scene—lime green shag carpet, record sleeve… So cute!

If you’ve made something fun from a Mochimochi pattern, please add it to the Mochimochi Friends Flickr group! It will appear on the gallery page, and it will automatically be entered in our next photo contest.

Speaking of which, we need to get that contest scheduled and start figuring out prizes! Suggestions are welcome.

Jumbo Petite Pencil

This time of summer makes me a little nostalgic for the start of the school year. It was always such a thrilling mix of dread and excitement and new school supplies. With that in mind, I recently thought to see just how big I could get Petite Pencil (one of the mini designs from my 2010 book Knitting Mochimochi) to be using really thick yarn.

petitepencil_jumbo

Pretty big, right? Don’t ask why he’s trying to write on my laptop—I guess he’s not that sharp…

I used a combination of Hometown USA and Wool-Ease Thick & Quick yarns by Lion Brand. After so much tiny knitting, it’s really fun to pick up some size 10-1/2 needles and make something hefty in an hour or so. The pattern is the same as the itty-bitty guy in the book, except I added a couple more rows to the yellow part of the pencil.

I just shipped off my Jumbo No. 2 along with a few other guys to Schmancy in Seattle, where they will be a window display for next month. I’ll share pics of that when I have them!
