Disappearing MTA Signs

This is a bit off-topic, but I’ve always sort of admired these signs that appear in the subway stations of New York City:

I think it’s the simplicity, the font, and the size of the sign. At first glance, it almost looks like a minimalist ad campaign. Whether or not these notices are meant to be stylish, I don’t know, but something attracts me to them.

I’ve noticed recently that they’re being replaced with a less awesome design, which is disappointing. So before they’re all gone, I took a picture of one at the Broadway-Lafayette station.

Hearts & Daggers

heartsdaggersHearts & Daggers is another 2008 album that I missed last year. Kathy Foster of The Thermals mentioned it in a recent interview, so I thought I would check it out.

Interesting! Petra Haden combines her mostly wordless a cappella with violin and Miss Murgatroid’s accordion to make a sound that is a mixture of lovely and creepy. Much of the album is a kind of pretty drone that sounds like it comes from the distant past, or a dark indie movie about the distant past. I’m liking it for short to medium-length periods at a time.

Make Boo with Me at Annie & Co. in NY!

Update: The class was so much fun! We’re thinking about holding toy classes at Annie & Co. more regularly, so if you’re in NYC and interested, please contact me about it at info@mochimochiland.com.

I’ll be teaching a fun Boo-making class in NY next Wednesday night (May 20th) at Annie & Co. (93rd and Madison), from 6-8 pm. Knitters of all skill levels are welcome to sign up and learn the basics of knitting a toy! The cost is $50 plus supplies, which can be purchased for a special price the night of the class. Call or stop by the store to register!

Plants vs Zombies

Here is a new game from PopCap in which you plant cute plants that kill funny zombies, some of which wear pylons on their heads. I got to play it for about ten minutes last night, then John physically removed me from his computer.

It’s available as a download for Mac or PC for $20.
