For generations, women have expressed love of family through the painstaking art of embroidery. This February, gallery hanahou presents a new generation of embroidery artists using needle and thread to depict love in broader terms, whether idealized and simple or brutal and complicated. Curated by Kristen Rask, this group exhibit of affordable artwork will win your affection in more ways than one. A meaningful alternative to waxy chocolates.

In conjunction with Forget Me-Not, gallery hanahou will host an artist-led Valentine embroidery workshop on Saturday, February 7th, at 1 pm. Space is limited, so please contact info@galleryhanahou.com asap for details!

Mochimochi Ravelry Shop Now Open

Thanks in part to your input last month, I now have a pattern shop on Ravelry!

ravelrystore

It was very easy to set up, and hopefully it will be just as easy for people to buy patterns there as it currently is on my website.

For now, my newest patterns, special offers, and free patterns will still only be available here at mochimochiland.com, so it’s a good idea to sign up to my mailing list for annoucements (just email info@mochimochiland.com) or to check the blog frequently.

New Animal Collective

merriweather
Animal Collective has a new album just out, Merriweather Post Pavilion. After listening to it a few times, my thoughts are that it’s very good, but not their best for me. I really liked the frenetic energy of 2007’s Strawberry Jam and the gorgeously complex sound of their older albums. Merriweather Post Pavilion is a bit more easy and domesticated, and the lyrics are much more understandable than in previous albums, which for me is actually a bit of a drawback. It doesn’t leave so much up to the imagination, if that makes sense.

But MPP seems like Animal Collective’s most accessible album to date, so it’s probably a great introduction to their music if you’re not already a fan.

If you are already a fan, here is some other music from 2008 that you might have missed and may like:

Visiter by The Dodos
I love the way they combine simple acoustic sound with fun complex rhythms.

Ice Cream Spiritual by Ponytail
It took me a while to be ready for the heavy guitars and high-pitched growling, but at one point I just got it, and really liked it. (The son of the president of the company I work for plays in the band, in the interest of full disclosure.)

The Evening Descends by Evangelicals
A little psychedelic, and different enough to hold my attention. Also, they’re from my home state of Oklahoma!

Godfrey the Groundhog Now Available!

Everyone’s second-favorite February holiday is fast approaching – it’s Groundhog Day on February 2nd, of course! Get ready to celebrate either the coming spring or six more awesome weeks of winter by knitting Godfrey the Groundhog, just added to the Mochimochi Shop! (He also makes a great gift for that other February holiday.)

This top hat-wearing rodent is easy to spot in the wild: just keep an eye out for a sophisticated-looking mound of dirt!

Techniques for this interactive knit include knitting in the round on double-pointed needles, I-cord, and mattress stitch.

Bunny Drawer Pull

I was trying to do something with knitted bunny heads over the weekend, and feeling a little frustrated with it. At one point, in my exasperation, I sacrificed a bunny head to one of the drawer pulls on my desk. It popped right on!

The backs of the plastic eyes kind of get in the way, but if I replace those with yarn eyes, I bet it would make a pretty good pull. So maybe I’ll make more to gussy up my desk.

You Guessed It!

Those of you who guessed Groundhog Day on my last post are correct! That was too easy.

The pattern will be out very soon, but for now here’s another partial preview:

mound

That’s one suspiciously sophisticated-looking mound of dirt, no?

If you’re eager to get ready for it, the pattern calls for:
– Worsted-weight wool yarn (such as Cascade 220) in two shades of brown, black, and green
– Set of 7-inch long size 6 US (4.0 mm) double-pointed needles
– Tapestry needle
– One set of safety eyes
– Crochet hook
– Stuffing

Check back later this week for the pattern!

Hinty Hinty!

A good friend of mine loves all holidays, but she especially loves a certain holiday that’s coming up soon. She requested a toy with a theme of this holiday about two years ago, and this year I finally got around to making her toy. I loved it so much that I also made a pattern for it. What is it?

Here’s a hint: The holiday does not begin with a V.

Here’s another hint:

The pattern is coming soon to the Mochimochi Shop!
