Teeny-Tiny Diorama

A couple months ago I made a diorama as a little visual promo for Teeny-Tiny Mochimochi—I’ll mostly be using it for in-person events, so I thought I’d share some pics here for people who won’t be able to see it in person.

A diorama! The last time I made one of those, I think I was still in elementary school. I had a blast coming up with the scene that the Tinys from the book would inhabit. I determined early on that I needed a Tiny Chicken crossing the road, and her motivation turned out to be a pair of Tiny Fried Eggs.

(The Tiny Armadillo to the right is playing the role of roadkill.)

Tiny Bride and Tiny Groom are perpetually tying the knot, with Tiny Xs and Os serving as their wedding party.

And somehow a Tiny Caveman beating a Tiny Computer with his club seemed appropriate.

To make the diorama, I used many of my samples that I already had on hand from taking the photos that appear in the book, so the only things I had to make new were the scenery and the letters. But those letters were a ton of work! I timed it, and it took me exactly 30 minutes to make one of the inch-tall Es in “Teeny-Tiny.” I love how they came out though.

Soupy, of course, says he could have done way better. And gimme that Tiny Chicken.

If you live in NYC, you’ll be able to see this in person and get a signed copy of the book on September 8th at the Lion Brand Yarn Studio! (Check their website closer to the date for the details.)

Tiny Island

tinyisland

Who says you can’t be an island?

Soon you’ll be able to make a Tiny Island of your own—this one’s going to be in Teeny-Tiny Mochimochi! It’s coming out in just a few weeks! (I’ll also be previewing the actual photos from the book soon.)

No caption contest today, but we’ll get back to those next week. Have a great weekend, everyone!

Simons Family Photo Crew

This week and next I’m in my hometown of Owasso, Oklahoma, to work with my book photographer, Brandi Simons. These have been some of my favorite times in the past couple of years—Brandi is such a joy to work with, and her photos are amazing. Remember this one?

Brandi completely “gets” what I do with knitting, and she knows how to bring my toys to life with hilarious and beautifully shot scenes. She also shot the photos for Teeny-Tiny Mochimochi (coming out in less than a month!), and as you may have guessed, working with her again this summer means that you can expect another book in the future!

Often Brandi will get her whole family involved in our shoots. Her husband Mike Simons is also a professional photographer, and her daughters Sonnie and Sarah are excellent models and assistants.

I so wish I could share the amazing images that are coming from our work this week, but that must wait until the book is published, which will take more than a year! But I’ll be doing some previews from Teeny-Tiny soon, so I’ll finally get to share what Brandi did last year. Stay tuned!

Tiny Interview on CRAFT

Diane of CRAFT just posted an interview with me about my two years of tiny knitting on their blog.

Her great questions really made me reflect on what the challenge is all about. For example, what have I learned from this process?

I’ve learned that animals and plants are easy to knit, and toasters and mailboxes are more difficult (but can be really exciting when done right). I’ve learned that I have more sticktoitiveness than I had ever thought, and I’ve learned that bamboo needles are extremely durable.

Thanks Diane!

Tiny Skunk

Lookout!

tinyskunk

A knitted skunk is probably pretty safe, but maybe we shouldn’t take any chances. And I just realized that I forgot to give him a nose… maybe for the better as far as he’s concerned?

I’m traveling this weekend, so there won’t be a caption contest, but please leave yours in the comments anyway if you smell something funny!

Tiny Gnome at the Beach

I love this photo that Ravelry user Slohman took of Tiny Gnome on vacation!

tinygnome_slohman

Isn’t it fun how a simple color alteration can give this guy a new outfit (or no outfit at all, in the case of the dancing naked gnomes)? I wonder what else Tiny Gnome can do with the right threads…

If you’re looking for it, the Tiny Gnome pattern is available in the Mochimochi Shop, and it will also be included in Teeny-Tiny Mochimochi, coming out next month!

By the way, thank you for all the super sweet birthday wishes yesterday! 30 is off to a good start!

Coming Soon: Flushie the Toilet

Look who’s going to make a splash soon in Mochimochi Land!

flushie_announce

I’m kind of ridiculously excited about this design—as fellow toy designer Katie Boyette must know, it feels like a real accomplishment to figure out how to knit a toilet. The pattern for Flushie the Toilet and his sidekick Professor Plunger will be in the Mochimochi Shop any day now.

Flushie seemed somehow appropriate for today because it’s my birthday, and I’m turning 30! I am not ashamed to be a real grownup age and knitting toilets for a living.
